Books and Audiovisual material for the School of Media are held at the University Library on the Brayford campus.

You should always use the Library Catalogue which will tell you where the books are held, if the item is out on loan and the option to reserve it where the item is out on loan.

All the material in the collection is allocated a class number made up of numbers which refers to the subject matter that the item covers. The number will always have three numbers, for example 302, but many items have again been subdivided this is shown with a decimal place, for example 302.23. The material is then shelved in numerical order and letters are used to arrange the material in alphabetical order which is usually the first three letters of the author’s surname, for example 302.23 nic.

The list below is a general guide to the location of the books for this subject:

005 to 070 includes Computer Software, Journalism, News and Documentary
300 to 306 includes Communication, Media as a Means of Communication and Mass Culture
384 includes Communication and Telecommunications
343.099 includes Law and the Media and is located in the law library
621 includes engineering and allied operations such as radio, television and sound engineering
770 includes Photography and Photographs
771 includes Photography Techniques and Procedures
778 includes Kinds of Photography, Cinematography and Video Production
780 includes Music
791 includes Public Performance including Motion Pictures, Radio and Television
800 to 808 includes literary forms including scriptwriting

As you will see the books are not located in one area of the library but are located in a number of areas depending on what area of the media you are studying.

Some books are located in specialist collections within the Library and will be shelved in different sections to the main collection of books. Examples of special collections include:

  • Reference material includes a range of useful items, such as dictionaries, directories and encyclopaedias.
  • The Law Library is located on the 3rd floor of the University Library at Brayford campus and contains law reports, journals, encyclopaedia and citations. They are arranged in alphabetical order of title and are for reference only. Books with the call numbers 340 – 349.999 are also located here.
  • Oversized books are located on the 3rd floor of the University Library. For this subject items of interest will be in art, photography and design. This area will continue to grow as new books are purchased, therefore please use the catalogue to check for the location of books.
  • An audio-visual collection that houses DVDs and Blue-Ray is available on the first floor.

We are building a collection of ebooks to support you in your studies. Ebooks are available 24 hours a day seven days a week and do not incur fines. They are also available to many users at any time and are immediately available and so will be available when you need them. Finding ebooks couldn’t be easier as they can be located on the library catalogue or you can search our ebook catalogues which are available on the e-Library pages of the Portal
