Databases

A database enables you to search and retrieve information using keywords in your subject.

Depending on what you are studying, it is likely that you will need to search a number of databases.  This is because different journals on the same topic such as photography or television, can be held in different databases.

Some databases are:

  • full text, where you can read the full article usually as a pdf scan of the article
  • abstracted, where brief description of the article is available.  If the full text is not available you will need to check for our electronic access or make an inter-library loan.
  • indexed, where there is only a reference with no more information.  In this case you have little to go on about whether to read the article.  to access it you will need to check for our electronic access or make an inter-library loan

All the following databases can be accessed through the e-library pages of the Portal from on or off campus.  If you are off campus use the gateway as details of how to ask for help with access difficulties can also be found here.
